Space blanket |
Old space blankets should periodically be inspected to make sure they are still usable |

Rain pants |
Taped and waterproof, not water-resistant; even if dry, rain gear is an important thermal layer in case of emergency |
1 |
Spare thermal top |
Long-sleeve, fleece, wool, synthetic top, to be kept in reserve; this is not your race-top at the start of the race. Arm warmers will not suffice |

Hydration system |
We recommend you have capacity for at least 50 oz. There is plenty of water on course from natural sources, and there is a natural water source near Mid-Camp. Race-provided water will be limited and mostly designated for cooking. |
1 |
Appropriate pack |
Pack should be big enough to carry all food and gear except for tent and cook gear |
1 |
Headlamp |
Must have sufficient battery power for a night of racing; you will not be out all night, but the days are getting shorter, so plan for several hours on Day 1, some time in Mid-Camp and likely an hour or two to start Day 2. Lights should serve in an emergency if you are lost and out longer than expected overnight. |
Racer discretion |
Food |
We may have some treats at Mid-Camp, but you must provide food for the duration of the event and carry it with you |
1 |
Sleeping bag |
Appropriate sleep system for the conditions |
1 |
Ground pad |
Ground insulation is mandatory; fall in the mountains means hypothermia if you sleep on the ground without insulation |
Racer discretion |
Dry bag(s) |
Means to keep gear dry during the event, especially safety gear, food, and extra clothing. |
Racer discretion |
Emergency supplies |
Do not shirk on food and clothing. Make sure you have enough to sustain you and keep you warm for the duration of the event |
1 |
Bright orange |
Fall is hunting season in PA; all outdoor recreationalists need to wear some sort of bright orange layer for identification. A shirt, hat, etc. will suffice. We will have some lightweight orange mesh pinnies for anyone without suitable orange. |
Racer discretion |
Suitable clothing |
Clothes for two days of racing and whatever you might want in Mid-Camp; clothing should be suitable for the weather and terrain. You may encounter thick underbrush and biting insects, including ticks; we recommend long pants. You should pack synthetic/wool tops and bottoms for thermal protection |

Race rules, maps, passports |
Provided by race organization; Maps will largely be 1:24,000 in scale, though we may print some at 1:30,000. Maps will mostly be printed on 8.5x11 water-resistant paper; some may be on 11x17 paper. Passports will be printed on waterproof paper, and other documents may be a mix of water-resistant and standard, non-water-resistant paper. We will provide maps to all racers. |

|
1 |
Map case |
Some way to keep your maps dry |
Racer discretion |
Water purification |
There is ample ground water on course; you will encounter numerous mountain streams in addition to marshy areas. While some may tempt fate, we recommend treating all water, regardless of the seeming cleanliness of the source. Racers are responsible for sourcing and treating drinking water throughout the event. |

Knife |
Locking blades |
1 |
Firestarter |
Lighter, waterproof matches, etc.; should be operational in wet conditions |
Mandatory Team Gear (to be transported to midcamp)
We will transport the following gear to Mid-Camp and then back to the finish. Please honor the spirit of this event. In traditional mountain marathons, teams carry EVERYTHING. To make the event more accessible to less experienced teams or those without featherweight gear, we are transporting a limited amount of gear. Please, do not try to sneak any other equipment or food into this transported-gear. Everything else on the gear list goes into your pack and travels with you!

Team discretion |
Tent |
Tents should be suitable for fall-camping; it may be quite cold overnight. Tents should be waterproof |
Team discretion |
Cooking gear |
Cooking gear includes: stoves, fuel, and cookware. That's it! No food! (and no, if you do not want warm food, you do not need to pack cook gear!) |
1 |
Mid-Camp bag |
Please pack your Mid-Camp gear in a duffel bag or some other sort of bag big enough to carry your gear. We will do our best to provide shelter for bags if it is wet/raining, using tarps. We cannot guarantee bags will stay totally dry, especially when teams start moving the tarps during the race. We recommend using contractor-style trash bags to line your Mid-Camp bags to ensure your gear stays dry. AGAIN, NO EXTRA GEAR, CLOTHES, FOOD, OR FLUIDS IN YOUR BAG! |
1 |
Emergency bag |
A small pack of dry, warm clothes for each member of the team. This bag will be available in case of emergency. Teams accessing this bag will be disqualified from the event. You may be allowed to continue unofficially pending RD discretion |
1 per person |
Mug |
In an effort to reduce waste, we are asking racers to bring their own mug for mid-camp. You may store this in your gear bag for transport. |

Watch |
Value |
Altimeter |
Some big terrain in central PA; while not necessary, an altimeter might make a checkpoint or two a bit easier to find! |
|
Camera |
Phones are not permitted other than in an emergency. We have heard of and seen too many cases of people using their phones as navigation devices to allow them. Many companies make small, lightweight, waterproof cameras perfect for outdoor adventures |
|
|
Ground tarp |
Mid-Camp is in a relatively clean field this year; still, a ground tarp doesn't hurt! This may be packed with your tent |

GPS devices |
If you want to use a device for the sake of tracking your route for later download, you may be permitted to use it but must discuss this with the organization ahead of the race. Adventure racing and orienteering are map and compass events. Teams using GPS devices to assist with navigation, pace-counting, etc. will be disqualified |
|
Night vision |
Any night-vision enabled devices will result in disqualification |
|
|
Communication devices |
A cell phone is required for emergencies only; no other such devices should be carried or used unless approved by the organization; use of such devices will result in disqualification |
Motorized transportation |
In the case of Stockville, all forms of transportation other than foot travel are prohibited and will result in disqualification |
